The AOD retains its factory shift pattern and is a great option for stock vehicles that still want a stronger, longer lasting transmission than a regular OEM replacement. These transmissions have a normal shift pattern for ease of driving, but are much more durable than a factory OEM replacement.
The AOD is bolted to the engine by the use of an integral bellhousing. Ford small-blocks used the same bellhousing bolt pattern, this allows the AOD to be bolted directly to earlier Ford small-block engines. To be sure measure the distance between your two top mounting bolts on the bellhousing. If you Install the AOD in place of the earlier C4, It will involve moving the cross member back 2 inches and drilling new holes for a transmission mount. When transplanting an AOD into a vehicle older than 1981, you need to use a 1977-1981 C4 flexplate and starter with the AOD lockup torque converter, otherwise balance of the crankshaft will be off.
